Compass for Girls — About the Day

This fun and engaging workshop includes:

  • Lively icebreakers that are sure to get the girls talking and laughing
  • Four 75-minute break-out sessions (see details below)
  • A delicious and healthy snack and lunch
  • Special gifts to remember and reinforce the Compass experience

Here is a SAMPLE schedule for your daughter’s day:

8:30 –  9:00 Check-In Main Entrance
9:00 –  9:10 Opening and Transition Contest Gym
9:15 – 10:30 Breakout Session: TRUE NORTH Compass Room 3
10:35 – 11:55 Breakout Session: GO WEST! Compass Room 2
Noon – 12:25 Lunch served Cafeteria
12:30 – 1:45 Breakout Session: WHEN THINGS GO SOUTH Compass Room 1
1:50 – 3:15 Breakout Session: A PIECE OF EAST, plus written survey evaluating Compass Gym
3:20 –  3:30 Closing Ceremony Library

All girls will participate in each of these scheduled events for the same amount of time listed above, but not necessarily in the order of the time slots listed.  Each girl will be assigned to a group of no more than 12 girls with whom she will travel through her schedule for the day.  All girls will participate in opening and closing ceremonies together, and will eat lunch at the same time.


Breakout Sessions

Each girl will participate in each of these scheduled events for the same amount of time listed above, but not necessarily in the order of the time slots listed. Each girl will be assigned to a group of 6 to 12 girls with whom she will travel through her schedule for the day. All the girls will come together for the opening and closing ceremonies, and lunch. The yoga portion will combine groups for up to 24 girls.

Compass for Girls

To help the girls develop their inner compass and apply what they learn at the workshop to their everyday lives, the Compass Curriculum is divided into four segments, corresponding with the directions on a compass.

Session Objectives for 4th Grade:

TRUE NORTH

  • Explore basic self-awareness by identifying traits of ourselves
  • Identify traits of healthy relationships and friendship red flags

GO WEST!

  • Learn how to recognize, label and express feelings
  • Learn how to respond mindfully (thoughtfully) to strong feelings

WHEN THINGS “GO SOUTH”

  • Learn steps to problem solving and how to resolve relationship struggles
  • Learn how exclusion feels

A PIECE of EAST

  • Discuss the physical connections to experiencing emotions
  • Teach the girls breathing techniques to help them address emotional responses
  • Teach the girls yoga poses and visualization tools to help the girls learn how to calm their minds and bodies

Session Objectives for 5th Grade:

TRUE NORTH

  • Learn the basics of self-awareness
  • Learn how to be more self-accepting and challenge negative thoughts using affirmations

GO WEST!

  • Explore some of the things that make us who we are and different from others
  • Learn how to view things from someone else’s perspective
  • Learn steps to resolving conflicts

WHEN THINGS “GO SOUTH”

  • Learn a simple process for handling emotional responses
  • Learn how to implement conflict resolution steps
  • Learn the impact of spreading rumors

A PIECE of EAST

  • Discuss self-acceptance and self-compassion in the practice of yoga
  • Teach the girls breathing techniques to help them during conflict resolution
  • Teach the girls yoga poses and visualization tools to help the girls learn how to calm their minds and bodies
